Hotel d’Inghilterra
6 Jan 2012 0:00
Explore the Hotel d’Inghilterra.
Few locations in Rome can boast a history as prestigious as that of the Hotel d’Inghilterra.
Once the aristocratic residence of the 16th century Princes of Torlonia it was Byron’s, Keats’ and Shelley’s favourite hotel in the 1800s, followed by the likes of Mark Twain, Hemingway, Elisabeth Taylor and Gregory Peck in the Dolce Vita years of the 1900s.
Today, the hotel remains the preferred destination of the international elite, of those who appreciate its eclectic originality, its exquisite elegance, impeccable service and magnificent location just steps from the Spanish Steps and Via Condotti. World celebrities, noblemen and travellers who seek destinations rich in history meet in the Hotel’s cosy sitting rooms, surrounded by gorgeous wood paneling, Chinese lacquer ware and deco furniture or chat in the Bar d’Inghilterra, Rome’s most British ambience. The Cafè Romano restaurant completes the picture with a dining experience that regales all the senses, offering Roman dishes crafted to perfection.
Guest Rooms
A true homage to individual style, the hotel’s 89 guest rooms and suites are all different – almost as if a somewhat eccentric proprietor has aimed to offer his personal guests amazing settings in which to let them enjoy his own extraordinary passion for art, travel and the good life. From the elegantly Classic Double room to the Presidential Suite and its magnificent terrace overlooking the rooftops of the Eternal City, all of the rooms make their guests feel as though they are staying in a private villa where the past blends seamlessly into the present. Baroque mirrors reflect modern flower compositions and the finest of fabrics highlight the understated elegance of designer tables. The service staff offers impeccable and discrete service that will make you feel thoroughly pampered and perfectly looked after.
Restaurant & Bar
The city of Rome needs no introduction, it is a capital that delights all the senses with its spectacular beauty, stunning sunsets and romantic glow. It is a city where life and its pleasures - and sharing them with others - are a true delight. These can be celebrated at the Hotel d’Inghilterra’s fine restaurant, the Cafè Romano, and in the stylish retro ambience of its British bar, the Bar d’Inghilterra.
The Cafè Romano
Just a few steps from the Spanish Steps on elegant via Borgogna, defined by the Los Angeles Times as the ultimate fashion street, the Cafè Romano is the Hotel d’Inghliterra’s exclusive restaurant, one of the most famous of the capital’s temples to fine food in the centre of the city. The clientele of this great restaurant includes the Roman elite and international visitors, people who select it for its metropolitan chic. They go there to enjoy a champagne breakfast, a snack while shopping, a lunch with friends or a romantic candlelight dinner with a loved one.
Chef Antonio Vitale’s culinary creativity was honed working at several Michelin star restaurants and he has taken the cuisine of Rome to heart, revisiting it with his own innate sense of delight. His creations are served with elegance and enthusiasm by the finely trained staff of Restaurant Manager Marco Lo Verso, who is an AIS Sommelier and will assist you in the ideal choice of wines for the evening. The menus of the Cafè Romano are carefully crafted and include the “Chef’s daily special”, a weekly menu, a light lunch menu, a carefully composed evening menu and a special tasting menu. The restaurant is open from 7am to midnight, the sign of a truly cosmopolitan eatery, and welcomes its guests in a dining room decorated with art ranging from the 1800s to today. The outdoor eating area is right on via Borgogna, just around the corner from the city’s most elegant boutiques.
Bar d’Inghilterra
There are many good reasons to grant yourself a well-earned break at the bar of the Hotel d’Inghilterra. First among them is the delight in discovering one of the most authentically British spots in Italy’s capital, complete with luscious leather armchairs, vintage furniture and art. This delightfully cosy setting has always attracted great artists and celebrities from the world of entertainment, people like sculptor Alexander Calder, for example, who once drew a marvelous doodle that to this day is jealously guarded by the Hotel’s beloved longtime concierge, Giuseppe Iaquinto. Apart from its famous guests, the Bar d’Inghilterra also boasts an illustrious bartender, Peter Reynolds, the crafter of perfect martinis, brilliant Kyr Royals and unforgettable Irish coffees. And the coffee? Well, people cross the city to enjoy a cup of it here in Little England! It's so good, in fact, that in 2002 it was awarded the Best Coffee in Rome award and according to the very prestigious Italian gourmet magazine, the Gambero Rosso, it still ranks among the top 13 best espressos in Italy.
